How to get your brand cited in ChatGPT, Perplexity and AI Overviews

  • Level: Intermediate
  • A few weeks to set up

The short answer

Ask AI assistants the questions your buyers ask and note which sources they cite. Publish pages that answer those questions in the first lines, with facts you can support and structured data that matches the page. Keep them crawlable and track citations over time; nothing can guarantee them.

The marketing problem
Buyers now ask assistants questions they used to type into a search box. Useful expertise is often buried in pages that are hard to read or verify. Clear answers and traceable sources help readers and machines alike; inclusion in an AI answer still cannot be promised.
Who this is for
Marketers responsible for a company or personal website’s organic visibility.
Tools involved
  • Google Search Console
  • Claude API

  • A list of the questions buyers ask before they buy

Step by step

  1. 01 AI step

    Ask assistants your buyers’ questions

Ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Mode the same questions in fresh chats. Log the answer, the brands named and the cited URLs in a spreadsheet.

    Prompt to copy

I’m a [role] at a [type of company]. [Buyer question, in the words a buyer would use.]

  2. 02 You decide

    Write clear, sourced answers

Answer each question in the first one or two sentences of a section, then give detail, examples and sources. Use facts and experience you can support.

  3. 03 Tool

    Structure and describe the page

Use descriptive headings, keep one topic per page and add structured data that matches what is visible. If you publish llms.txt, generate it from the same content.

  4. 04 Output

    Check access and track citations

Confirm the page is indexed and that robots.txt allows the AI crawlers you want. Repeat the same questions monthly and log citations; citation is still the assistant’s decision.

Where a person decides

An editor writes and approves every answer; which sources an assistant cites remains the assistant’s decision.

What to watch for

  • Structured data and llms.txt do not guarantee rankings or citations.
  • Answers vary by assistant, by wording and over time; one test is an anecdote.
  • Blocking AI crawlers in robots.txt removes the chance of being cited by them.

How to tell it is working

  • Pages are indexed and readable without JavaScript.
  • The same questions are asked of each assistant every month and citations are logged.
  • Changes are recorded as observations, not as proof of cause.

An illustrative example

Input

Illustrative: a service page lists capabilities but never says who the service helps or how an engagement works.

Output

A clearer page that answers those questions in its first lines, with supporting links and structured data that matches the visible content, and a monthly log of which assistants cite it.
